Bright and early Tuesday, January 23, Jack Quaid and Zazie Beetz announced the nominees for the 96th Academy Awards. As expected, “Oppenheimer” was the showstopper with 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Directing, a favorite in both categories. As has been shaping up all awards season, “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” and “Poor Things” were some of the other stalwarts with 11, 10, and 8 nominations, respectively. Films like “May December” missed out, which garnered a single award for Best Adapted Screenplay, despite early acting award projections for Julianne Moore and Charles Melton. Films like “Anatomy Of A Fall” and “The Zone Of Interest” were on the rise and likely helped by voting from 93 countries.

On the acting front, “Nyad” made the same impact it made for the Screen Actors Guild nominees, with Annette Bening pushing out Margot Robbie and her performance in “Barbie,” and Jodie Foster appearing for her “Nyad” supporting role. Robbie may have missed, but America Ferrera surprised in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category. Her epic speech in “Barbie” and her poise and grace throughout the award ceremonies leading up to Academy voting are likely just some of the reasons why. “American Fiction” overperformed as well, with Sterling K. Brown as the beneficiary of Charles Melton missing in Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Laura Karpman’s score sneaking in, on top of nominations for Jeffrey Wright, Cord Jefferson’s screenplay and Best Picture.

John Williams and Diane Warren were some Academy favorites who received nominations for work arguably not the best of the year, with “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Flamin’ Hot,” respectively. The Animation Branch moved away from the more well-known big-budget fair and nominated “Nimona” and “Robot Dreams” over the likes of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.” Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”) missed out on the Directing category, but Justine Triet (“Anatomy Of A Fall”) made sure to disrupt the male-heavy category.

Some shockers included “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” missing out in the Documentary Feature category and getting replaced by “To Kill A Tiger.” Despite grabbing a nomination for Original Song, “American Symphony” also missed out on Documentary Feature. The Walt Disney short “Once Upon A Studio” was left out of the Documentary Short category. And, with France submitting “The Taste Of Things” as their International Feature nominee over “Anatomy Of A Fall,” they missed out entirely. In what is likely the biggest upset of the morning, Jonathan Glazer, who is also a Directing nominee, received the Adapted Screenplay nomination for “The Zone Of Interest,” which got in over Martin Scorsese and Eric Roth’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

The 96th Academy Awards will be handed out on Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre, with a new start time of 7:00 p.m. ET / 4:00 p.m. PT, hosted again by Jimmy Kimmel.
