In a preview of what will likely be a big win come Oscars night, Christopher Nolan took the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Narrative Feature award for his work on “Oppenheimer.” Nolan is one of my favorite directors, and his range makes his work more compelling. Anyone could have told the story of the man who created the first atomic bomb, but Nolan brings a passion and flair that not many directors could replicate. And in doing so, he directed one of the year’s best films.

Celine Song won Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a First-Time Narrative Feature, deservedly so. “Past Lives” was a remarkable feat of story-telling. “American Fiction” was also a strong debut from Cord Jefferson, but if I had to pick one, it would be “Past Lives.” And Mstyslav Chernov won Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary with his film “20 Days In Mariupol,” the documentary I’m pulling for to win the Oscar. “The Last of Us,” “The Bear,” and “Lessons In Chemistry” were among the winners in the television categories.
