Besides a protest outside the Dolby Theater, the 96th Academy Awards went off without a hitch. In his fourth time hosting the ceremony, Jimmy Kimmel took the stage with a wonderful opening monologue, some smartly written gags throughout the night, and a hilarious but true performance review that former president Donald Trump posted about him on social media. “Oppenheimer” landed as the night’s big winner, grabbing Best Picture, Directing, Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Cinematography, Film Editing, and Original Score. As always, there were a few surprises, including “The Zone Of Interest” beating out “Oppenheimer” to win Best Sound and “The Boy and the Heron” beating out “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” to win Best Animated Feature. The performances of the Best Original Songs were all impactful, with Billie Eilish becoming the youngest person to win two Academy Awards, with her win for her song in “Barbie” (the only award the film would win). Using the five previous winners to announce the nominees for the acting awards made the entire night feel more special, although I did miss the video packages.
“Poor Things” was a big winner, taking several technical awards, including Best Makeup and Hairstyling (beating out “Maestro”), Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design (both beating out “Barbie”). In one of the night’s most anticipated awards, Emma Stone would win Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in “Poor Things,” a win that many thought would go to Lily Gladstone for her role in “Killers Of The Flower Moon.” Martin Scorsese’s film wouldn’t win a single award. Many award season sweeps concluded with Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Robert Downey Jr. winning in their Supporting categories, “The Zone Of Interest” winning Best International Feature Film, and “Anatomy Of A Fall” winning Best Original Screenplay. We may have thought the Best Adapted Screenplay category was up for grabs, but it turned out that all the heat Cord Jefferson had gained for “American Fiction” translated into an Academy Award win. Wes Anderson won his first Oscar, not for a feature-length film but for one of his live-action shorts, although he wasn’t on hand to accept the award. The visual effects team behind “Godzilla Minus One” was rewarded for their efforts by receiving the golden statue. Overall, the night was generally entertaining, with no real standout moments besides a naked John Cena presenting the Best Costume Design award and Messi the dog “peeing” on Matt Damon’s star on the Walk Of Fame.
