97TH ACADEMY AWARDS | 2025 OSCARS CHALLENGE
ELTON JOHN: NEVER TOO LATE
JANUARY 26, 2025
DISNEY+

There may not be a more impressive performer than Elton John, and it’s hard not to root for him. When the Oscars shortlists came out, I saw his name and didn’t think he’d make the final cut because what song could he write that would top his extensive list of hits? But “Never Too Late” is a good song that fits the documentary nicely. Even though his story has been told many times before, “Elton John: Never Too Late” frames around the performer’s final tour. By framing it that way, the documentary doesn’t feel like as much of a rextread as it could have. As much as the song caught me by surprise, it doesn’t rise above any other nominees I’ve heard thus far. Also, “Emilia Pérez” is a Best Picture nominee with two songs contending for the Oscar, both having previous wins this awards season. Meanwhile, this is the sole nomination for “Never Too Late,” which has no previous accolades. However, I wish they were performing the songs at the ceremony to see Elton John take the stage one last time.

It showcases a never-before-seen concert footage of him over the past 50 years, as well as hand-written journals and present-day footage of him and his family.
