GENE HACKMAN
January 30, 1930 – February 18, 2025 (95)
Born: San Bernardino, California
Gene Hackman was simply a force of nature. To me, he’ll always be Jimmy McGinty—the gruff, no-nonsense coach in The Replacements who believed in underdogs when no one else would. He’ll always be Rear Admiral Reigart in Behind Enemy Lines, the man who defied orders to do what was right. He was the chain-smoking con artist in Heartbreakers, the aloof yet quietly aching patriarch in The Royal Tenenbaums, and the paranoid wiretap expert in Enemy of the State. Hackman moved effortlessly between genres, always grounding his characters in something real—flawed, human, and magnetic. He worked with the best: Coppola, Friedkin, Eastwood. He won two Oscars, earned three more nominations, and somehow still felt underrated.
