Festival season is in full swing. With Venice and Telluride underway and TIFF50 about to start, the International Feature Oscar race is already taking shape. Countries are beginning to lock in their submissions, and a few early frontrunners are standing out.

Norway’s pick, Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” is the buzziest contender right now. Fresh off a Cannes Grand Prix win, it’s even being called stronger than his Oscar-nominated The Worst Person in the World. Other Cannes breakouts already chosen include “Sound of Falling,” “Eagles of the Republic,” “The Love That Remains,” and Sean Baker’s co-written “Left-Handed Girl.” Sundance title “2000 Meters to Andriivka” could also play, though likely in the Documentary category.

Several countries haven’t made their final calls, but a few films are looking likely: Brazil’s “The Secret Agent,” Chile’s “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo,” and Denmark’s “The Last Viking” with Mads Mikkelsen. The Cannes Palme d’Or winner, “It Was Just an Accident,” should be an automatic submission for someone, either France or Luxembourg. If Luxembourg gets it, France’s submission may be Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague.” And out of Venice, Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” is already getting buzz as South Korea’s obvious choice.

With more than 60 countries still to announce, the race is far from set—but festival season is already giving us a clear picture of which titles could go the distance.

WHY I CHOSE THESE TEN?

One thing is for sure: NEON is cornering the market on international frontrunners. Five of this year’s top ten contenders are being distributed by the company. That includes the film widely considered the one to beat, “Sentimental Value.” NEON also holds the rights to Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice,” which likely has the name recognition to secure a nomination. Rounding out their lineup are the Cannes titles “The Secret Agent,” “It Was Just an Accident,” and “Sirāt.” I can’t imagine NEON landing more than three spots in the final lineup, so I’ll pick “The Secret Agent” and hedge the rest of my predictions with films from other distributors.

Speaking of name recognition, Richard Linklater having a film in contention makes me think it could jump to the front of the pack. With Netflix backing “Nouvelle Vague,” I’m confident it has a strong shot. Netflix also has “Left-Handed Girl,” produced by Sean Baker—their golden boy from last year—so it’ll be interesting to see if that helps its chances.

I’m also taking a flier on MUBI’s “Sound of Falling.” Some who’ve seen it are skeptical about its chances, and it ranks lower on most prediction lists, but I’ve got a gut feeling it could sneak in. MUBI also has Paolo Sorrentino’s latest Italian entry, “La Grazia,” which feels like another dark horse. And finally, don’t overlook Sony Pictures Classics. They’ve proven time and again they can elevate films in this category, and “The President’s Cake” is one to keep on your radar.
